New guide to employment rights for older people

More older people than ever remain in work beyond the traditional age of retirement.  This is often because they choose to and are still able to work, but also because their pension does not give them enough money to live comfortably.  Regulations introduced by the Government in October 2006 mean that older workers are afforded protection against discrimination as a result of their age.

Carers who work have also won the right from this month (April 2007) to request flexible working and this will also benefit many older workers.

Now Counsel and Care have published a new factsheet for older people who work in their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.  ‘Older People in Paid Employment’ is a guide to their entitlements and rights as older workers. Counsel and Care’s new factsheet covers the following issues:
• Finding a job
• An individual’s rights in the workplace
• The Age Discrimination regulations, retirement, dismissal and benefits
• How to complain or raise concerns if someone has been the victim of unfair treatment as a result of their age.

Stephen Burke, Chief Executive of Counsel and Care said: “This new factsheet is an important addition to Counsel and Care’s comprehensive range of information for older people, their families and carers.  I hope that older people will feel more confident about asserting their rights in the workplace and challenging when they feel they have been unfairly treated.  Older workers have a great deal to offer both individual workplaces and the economy and country as a whole.”

Counsel and Care’s 40 comprehensive factsheets cover a range of issues which affect older people - for example, finding a care home place, how to fund a care home place, going into hospital, maintaining a property, accessing care in the community, and benefits available to older people.
