Hidden treasure trove unveiled in Ripon
03/04/2007
Ripon Cathedral’s "hidden stash" of gargoyles, memorials and medieval woodcarvings will now be more accessible to visitors thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £47,300.
Volunteers at Ripon Cathedral hope to reach the parts that others have not reached by shedding light on some of its hidden treasures, and attract people who may never have visited a Cathedral before.
In addition to opening up the hidden treasures, workshops for educational and community groups are also planned for the next 12 months, starting on Saturday June 30th 2007 with “Interactive Heritage in your Cathedral”, an event organised in conjunction with Ripon City Partnership’s “Discover Ripon Day”. People of all ages will be able to take part in a number of activities in the Cathedral, from hand-bell ringing and crafts to needlework, flower arranging and gargoyle drawing. The day will include storytelling and craft demonstrations of woodcarving and stained glass window making.
The Cathedral is also asking local people to join their team of volunteers. Anyone interested in taking part or in booking a speaker or a tour of the Cathedral for their group can contact the Heritage Project Manager, Toria Forsyth–Moser, at the Ripon Cathedral Office, Liberty Courthouse, Minster Road, Ripon, HG4 1QS. Alternatively call 01756 603462 or email ToriaForsythMoser@RiponCathedral.org.uk.
