Relentless roadrunner still buzzing at 70
By Tony Watts - Editor - 19/03/2007
Tom Harrison, 70, will be joining “The Buzzers”, Help the Aged's running team for this year’s Flora London Marathon to raise money for the “Enough is Enough” campaign which aims to tackle elder abuse. Tom, who ran his first Marathon in 2004, enjoyed it so much he now has three “Londons” under his belt and qualifies for a “Good for Age” place in this year’s event.
Tom has raised over £7,000 during the past three years. He said: “ At my age it’s a non-stop attempt to overcome a variety of ‘creaks and squeaks’, but knowing that I’m helping to brighten the lives of older people really spurs me on, as well as the generosity of my donors who have supported me over the years.”
Tom also excels in a rather unusual sport called ‘Bog Snorkelling’, which involves snorkelling - with flippers - through two 60 yard trenches in a peat bog. He is the current ‘World Bog Snorkelling Pensioner Triathlon Champion’.
Miranda Harman, Help the Aged Fundraiser, said: “We are still looking runners for the Marathon on April 22nd. Our runners are mentored, receive tailored training plans, newsletters and a dedicated Help the Aged representative to provide guidance. Money raised will go towards helping fund the ‘Action on Elder Abuse’ response line for sufferers of elder abuse and those who suspect it.”
