Clicks for the wartime memory

The Second World War Experience Centre has launched a new charity search page to raise funds to collect and preserve personal experiences of the Second World War before they are lost forever.

Set up conjunction with Click Now, the international archive holds wartime letters, diaries, photographs, papers and tape recordings of memories, documenting life at home and abroad during the war. The search page works like any other search engine - the user simply types key words into the search box to search the world-wide-web. But the difference is, each time the Centre’s search page is used 50% of the profits (normally collected from advertisers) will go towards preserving the collection for future generations. And there is no cost to the Centre or to the user.

Liz Emeny at the Centre says, “We are urgently appealing to internet users to switch to our page. It only takes a couple of seconds and would mean a great deal to everyone who donates material to us or values the archive as an important source of information for future generations.

"As well as providing an invaluable resource for historians, societies, researchers, authors and broadcasters, the Centre also works with schools to ensure that the knowledge of this period is not forgotten. We owe it to all those who lived through that great period of history."

Appeal for amateur historians

The Second World War Experience Centre is appealing for volunteers to come into the Centre to be trained in tape-recording so that they can visit people in their homes (by prior arrangement) and record their memories. Liz said: “We have a wonderful team of volunteers throughout the UK but are still a bit low in a few areas. We are appealing for people who may have an interest in history to help us develop the collection. Only one day’s training is required at the Centre in Horsforth, Leeds”.
