Keeping memories alive for a loved one
27/12/2006
St Ann’s Hospice in Greater Manchester has devised a new way for families to keep alive the memory of a loved one through setting up a Tribute Fund - regardless of whether they or their families have attended the Hospice.
Previously only families belonging to patients at the Hospice could set up a Fund in memory of their relative, but now the opportunity is being opened up to include everyone. St Ann’s Fundraiser Mel Gait said: “We can now help any family establish a Tribute Fund in memory of a loved one so that the money they raise will help continue the free Hospice care we provide for thousands of patients."
One example of how a Tribute Fund can work is illustrated by beautician Sarah Vaughan, who is planning a "Black White & Bling Ball" in Altrincham on March 17 as part of a Tribute Fund in memory of her mother Shirley Greaves.
Said Sarah: “I can’t thank St Ann’s enough for what they did for my mum, and I just hope that raising money for the Hospice goes a little way to help others get the care they deserve."
Another supporter, Richard Hume from Heaton Moor, Manchester, said: “On hearing about the new Tribute Fund scheme, we jumped at the chance to set up one in memory of our Mum, Helen. It doesn’t matter if we raise £100 or £1,000, every little helps and it’s lovely to know that as a result of the fund and the money we raise, Mum’s memory will live on whilst helping others.”
St Ann’s Hospice, which provides free care to over 3,000 people each year across three sites and in people’s own homes, needs to raise approximately £16,000 every day cover the costs. Voluntary contributions, Legacies, Hospice Lottery, fundraising and trading activities amount to a total of £5.8 million a year which represents 65% of their total costs.
To set up a Tribute Fund call St Ann’s on 0161 498 3662 or email tributefunds@sah.org.uk and a dedicated member of the Hospice fundraising team will provide support and will help manage the Tribute Fund.
