Microwaves, myths and saving the planet’s resources

The trusty microwave has been with us for many years – revolutionizing the way many of us prepare our food. Some 85% of UK homes have at least one microwave oven, and that figure is still rising.

But, says the author of a new book, microwave cooking doesn’t just cook nutritious food quickly by using the natural moisture in the food to  effectively “steam” it in its own juice.

It also saves energy. Using a microwave oven to cook just a small amount of food can cut fuel bills by over £1.50 every week.

"Microwave Magic – The Art of 21st Century Cooking" has been written by Jennipher Marshall-Jenkinson, Chairman of the Microwave Technologies Association and is packed with easy-to-prepare recipes, helpful advice and practical tips.

And if you want a celebrity endorsement,  “Microwave cooking can help reduce your energy bills, provide you with more nutritious food – plus help to save the environment at the same time," says Marguerite Patten, President of the Microwave Technologies Association.

The book also seeks to correct some of the myths that have grown up around microwaves – such as the energy they use being unhealthy.

Microwaves can be invaluable for mature people, especially single people who don’t want to heat up an oven for one, or who will cook one evening and then use a microwave to reheat their supper the following day.
