The Senior Moment - Seasoned campaigner

Andrew YoungSPRING has finally sprung, the fruit trees are blossoming and flowers budding – not that we can, heaven forbid, water them – due to the hosepipe ban. This season, more than any other, ushers in a breath of fresh air, renewed hope and vigour combined, of course, with the overwhelming urge to spring clean.

We are not immune to change here at mature Times and, as announced in last month’s edition, we have to say a very sad and heartfelt “goodbye” to the title’s former editor David Thomas.

The Senior Moment - The key to power

David ThomasMature Times has no political affiliations. (We’ll have a crack at anyone opposed to the interests of our readers). And that’s why I’m making the following advice, on how to win a general election, freely available to the leaders of all parties. As we know, the Mature Vote will be key to winning future elections.

The problem would seem to be that politicians have yet to grasp this fact. If they had, we would not be "working harder and longer for less” (MT March 2012).

Have you had experience of a 'rogue trader'?

Every year, cowboy builders and rogue traders clock up around £1.5 billion worth of problems for homeowners across the country. From shoddy kitchens, to improperly installed whitegoods, to leaky roofs, there are plenty of horror tales around.

Some of the most vulnerable people in our society are being ground down by sales patter and false information by unscrupulous home salesmen - until they give in and buy products and services at hugely inflated prices.

Senior Moment: Coshing dementia sufferers

Senior moment

It sounds like some horrific science fiction - but it is all too real. Thousands of dementia sufferers – it’s estimated around one in four – are being prescribed powerful antipsychotics. These are tranquillisers designed to treat hallucinations and sedate the patient but their use is recommended for no more than two months. Yet in the majority of cases they are being given for up to two years at a time. The concern of families and carers is that the drug, dubbed the “chemical cosh”, robs those taking it of their dignity, unable to walk or talk. There is another concern: could it be that hospitals and other institutions find it easier to handle zombies than humans?

Thank you Mature Times

Long Eaton_U3AJust to show you the extent of our distribution of your excellent and well read newspaper.

Our Committee Member; Cindy Smith, took this photograph of a recent 50+ Forum meeting held in Long Eaton Town Hall, where the 100 or so members present, are each given a copy of the "Mature Times" to take home with them.

These are often read by younger members of the family.

Best wishes,

February Senior Moment

Senior momentJustice for Pauline

Cowering in her bedroom and doubtless terrified, Pauline Reddick must have felt confused and helpless as two thugs rummaged through her home downstairs. Although they did not assault her, it is likely they hastened her death. As a coroner was later to record, she died that same day at the age of 80 from a stroke, in all probability caused by the trauma.
