Response calls for a Commissioner for Older People
- Thursday, 16 February 2012
Nick Sanderson, Chairman of the Association of Retirement Villages and CEO of Audley Retirement Villages, said:
“It’s high time that the needs of older people were recognised and met. The appointment of a dedicated Commissioner would boost the focus on later life issues but it will only work if the role is filled by a member of the later life community who is supported by a team drawn from the same peer group."
"It would mean over 60s are empowered to lead the debate from the inside, no longer marginalised or patronised on issues, such as long term care, that affect them the most. Any Commissioner for Older People has to challenge Government and the private sector to reassess the choices available for and how to prepare for, and live into, retirement. Supporting older people to make decisions that keep them independent and in control of their future will go a long way to improving retirement in the UK.”
